Pete Townshend was the guitarist and principal songwriter for the Who from 1964 to 1982, also participating in the group’s occasional reunions after its formal separation. Best-known for his conceptual works, he wrote Tommy and Quadrophenia for the band, together with the majority of its own other material.

He made his first, tentative solo album, Who Came First, in 1972. Dedicated to his guru, Meher Baba, it continued subjects pursued in Who’s Next and like that record, contained content originally intended for an abortive conceptual work, Lifehouse, also it sold modestly. In 1976, Meher made a duo album, Rough Mix, with Ronnie Lane, formerly the bassist in the Small Faces. However, Townshend believed he could not write for the Who, and in the close of the entire year, the group disbanded following a North American tour.
Peter Dennis Blandford “Pete” Townshend (born 19 May 1945) is an English musician, singer songwriter, and multi instrumentalist, known mostly as the guitarist and songwriter for the rock group The Who. His career with The Who spans 50 years, during which time the band grew to be regarded as among the very most influential bands of the 1960s and 1970s.

Townshend is the primary songwriter for The Who, having composed well over 100 tunes for the band’s 11 studio albums, including concept albums and the rock operas “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia”, plus popular rock and roll radio staples like “Who’s Next”, and dozens more that appeared as non-album singles, bonus tracks on reissues, and tracks on rarities compilations such as “Odds & Sods”. He’s also composed over 100 songs that have appeared on his solo albums, along with radio jingles and television theme songs. Although known mainly as a guitarist, he also plays other instruments for example keyboards, banjo, accordion, harmonica, ukulele, mandolin, violin, synthesiser, bass guitar and drums, on his own solo albums, several Who records, and as a guest contributor to a wide selection of other artists’ recordings. He’s self-educated on all the instruments he plays and has never had any proper training.

Townshend has additionally been a contributor and author of paper and magazine articles, book reviews, essays, novels, and scripts, as well as collaborating as a lyricist (and composer) for many other musical acts. Townshend was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an associate of The Who in 1990.
