Joseph William “Joe” Frazier was born in Beaumont, South Carolina on 12th January 1944. He’s also been popularly known as ‘Smokin Joe’. Joe has been one of the more famous professional fighters of times. Joe was a World Heavy Weight Champion in boxing and is an Olympic gold medalist also. Joe has won 32 fights out of 37. Joe was at his top through the 1960’s when Joe could defeat almost all the very best rivals. His fight with Muhammad Ali in 1971 at New York ‘s Madison Square Garden is still remembered — it’s considered one of the most renowned boxing matches. It was known as the “Fight of the Century”. Joe eventually lost his Champion title when he was conquered by George Foreman.
A couple of years later Frazier lost his title when he was knocked out by George Foreman. He fought on, conquering Joe Bugner, losing a rematch to Ali and beating Quarry and Ellis again.
Frazier’s last world title challenge came in 1975, however he was defeated by Ali in their savage rubbermatch. He retired in 1976 following another loss to Foreman. He made a comeback in 1981, fighting just once, before retiring. The International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) rates Frazier among the ten greatest heavyweights ever. In 1999, “The Ring” rated him the 8th best heavyweight. He is an inductee of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame.
Frazier’s fashion was often compared to that of Henry Armstrong and occasionally Rocky Marciano, dependent on bobbing, weaving and relentless pressure to wear down his opponents. His best known punch was a strong left hook, which accounted for nearly all of his knockouts. In his career he lost to just two boxers, both former Olympic and world heavyweight champions: twice to Muhammad Ali, and twice to George Foreman.
After retiring, Frazier made cameo appearances in several Hollywood movies, and two episodes of “The Simpsons”. His daughter Jackie Frazier-Lyde additionally boxed professionally. Frazier continued to train fighters in his health club in Philadelphia. His later years found periodical insults and bitter feelings towards Ali, interspersed with brief reconciliations.
Frazier was diagnosed with liver cancer in late September 2011 and admitted to hospice care. His daughter Jackie Frazier-Lyde can be a world champion fighter.
