On account of his health, Binion had never had any formal education. He had incurred several violations which include two murder convictions, carrying of concealed weapons and theft. Binion also committed moonshining which convicted him twice.

He’d been involved with the murder of Frank Bolding,Ben Frieden, andLewis Tindell. Later on, he became a partner at theLas Vegas Clubcasino which he left a year later. Eventually, he purchased the building which housed theLas Vegas Club and found hisWesterner Gambling House and Saloon. In the same year, later additionally acquiredApache HotelandEldorado Clubwhich he later reopened asBinion’s Horseshoecasino. The casino was known for the high limits on stakes.

Teddy Jane, Binion’s wife served as the casino’s supervisor until her passing in 1994. In 1964, his sons Ted and Jack, started working for the casino as supervisor and president respectively. In 1998, his dauhgter Becky became the president and under her direction, the casino sunk into debt.
Binion’s FBI file shows a criminal history dating back to 1924, listing offenses such as theft, carrying hidden weapons, and two murder convictions. There, he started moonshining, for which he was twice convicted. In 1928, in fear of legal consequences, he gave up moonshining and started several operations. While he was in El Paso, he also learned to gamble, a favorite pastime of the traders waiting on the campgrounds. In 1931, Binion was convicted of killing an African American rum runner, Frank Bolding, “cowboy style.” This was the origin of Binion’s “Cowboy” nickname. Binion received a two-year suspended term. Binion would later kill Ben Frieden, a amounts operator in opposition with Binion. By 1936, Binion had gained control of gambling businesses in Dallas, with protection from a powerful local politician. On September 12, 1936, Binion and a henchman reportedly stalked Frieden and emptied their .45s into the unarmed guy. Binion subsequently shot himself in the shoulder and turned himself in to police, promising that Frieden had shot him first. Binion was indicted, but the indictments were later dismissed on the grounds that Binion had acted in self defense. In 1938, Binion and his henchmen allegedly killed Sam Murray, another of his opponents in the gaming rackets. Binion was never indicted for this homicide, and charges were dropped against his henchmen. By the early 1940s, Binion had become the reigning mob chief of Dallas. He then sought to take over the gambling rackets in Fort Worth. The neighborhood mob leader of this city, Lewis Tindell, was murdered shortly afterwards. The Chicago Outfit formed a successful move into Dallas after World War II. Binion lost his fix using the local government after the 1946 elections, and fled to Vegas. While in Dallas, Binion had started a long-running feud with Herb Noble, a small-time gambler in Dallas, which continued after Binion moved to Las Vegas. Binion posted a benefit on Noble’s scalp that eventually reached $25,000 and control of a Dallas crap game. Many tried to kill Noble, but he escaped or survived numerous attempts on his life, although occasionally with gunshot wounds. Eventually Noble’s wife was killed in an automobile bombing intended for him. In retaliation, Noble intended to fly his private plane to Vegas to bomb Binion’s house, but was restrained by local law enforcement before he could implement his strategy. Eventually, an automobile bomber succeeded in assassinating Noble. Binion lost his betting license in 1951, and was sentenced to some five-year duration in 1953 at Leavenworth federal penitentiary for tax evasion.
